During your child's first 6 months their vision begins to develop. Within the first 4 months, their vision becomes clearer, colour vision begins development, and they can coordinate both eyes to work together. Once they're 6 months old, they will be able to obtain eye movement control and develop hand-eye coordination. To ensure proper development and eye health, eye examinations are recommended for babies between the ages of 6 and 9 months old. During this time, many serious eye conditions can occur and will need to be identified during their eye exam. These conditions if left untreated can result in vision problems in the future.

Toddlers and preschoolers

Children's vision continues to develop well into their preschool years. Development of in-depth perception, hand-eye coordination, and visualization skills. Children will not be able to describe their vision as they have no point of reference. To ensure that your child's vision is properly developed it is recommended to have regular eye examinations. An annual eye examination is recommended for children between the ages of 2 and 5 .  Of course once started school, every year, if not more as vision develops.

At WestCoast Doctors of Optometry, children under 19 years of age with a valid BC Care card will be covered for an annual eye examination.
