Dr. Maria Yu-Wen Wang

Dr. Maria Wang was born in Taiwan and moved to Costa Rica at a very young age. She spent 10 years in Costa Rica before moving to Vancouver, Canada, which is her permanent home now. She graduated from the University of British Columbia in 2003 with a degree in Microbiology and Immunology, and completed her Doctor of Optometry degree at the University of Waterloo in 2007.

During her Optometry training, Dr. Wang spent a rotation in British Columbia, a rotation in the United States, and two rotations in Ontario. Throughout her training she spent time in specialty clinics including: pediatrics, ocular health, binocular vision, contact lens, low vision and gerontology. She also spent an extensive amount of time at the Eye Foundation of Utah, where she primarily treated and managed patients with glaucoma.

In addition to her Optometry training, Dr. Wang also took part in volunteer missions to provide much needed eye care in developing countries, and has travelled on missions to Peru and Chile. She plans to continue taking part regularly in such missions.

During her free time, Dr. Wang enjoys spending time outdoors – running, dragon boating, snowboarding, and hiking to name a few. She has also volunteered within her local community, the Special Olympics, as well as eye care missions in different countries.
